For closing the valve of a valve bag, the coated inner surfaces of the valve are activated after prior cleaning and interconnected by gluing or welding. In order that the valve is correctly positioned in relation to the tools carrying out individual operations, an accurate alignment is necessary after the bag has been pushed off from the filling pipe of the filling machine. A roller conveyor (1) is connected downstream of the filling machine. The driven rollers (4) of the roller conveyor (1) are arranged at such a spacing from one another that a support strip (5) of a comb (6), which is movable in the vertical direction, lies in each gap lying between two adjacent rollers. In the lower end position, the support strips (5) lie below the transport plane of the roller conveyor (1). In order to raise the bag, which has been transported into the region of the comb (6), from the rollers (4), the comb (6) is first moved upwards in the vertical direction and subsequently moved in a horizontal plane. At the same time, the bag is aligned by an aligning rail (10).
