PURPOSE:To determine the printing position of a label correctly and feed label precisely by seeking a differential value of data which is digitally output through time division, seeking a secondary derivative by differentiation of a waveform of differential value, and detecting the position of a part to be detected and the availability of the part to be detected from the waveform of the secondary derivative. CONSTITUTION:A gap detection circuit 16 is composed of an optical sensor circuit 17 to detect a gap 5 between labels 4 stuck on a board 3 of a continuous paper 2, an A/D converter 18 which converts an analog waveform to a digital waveform, RAM 19 which stores data, ROM 20 and CPU 21. An analog output detected by an optical sensor 24 is converted to a digital output which is divided by time using the A/D converter 18 to seek a differential value of digital output data divided by time. The secondary derivative is sought by differentiating the waveform of this differential value, and the position of a part to be detected and the availability of the part to be detected are detected by means of the waveform of the secondary derivative. Thus it is possible to determine the printing position of a label correctly and feed the label with high precision.
