In known devices, it is frequently impossible to accommodate the silencer volume necessary for efficient silencing in the existing installation space of a vehicle. In supercharged internal combustion engines, the problem of silencing is intensified, especially in lower partial load operation and overrun conditions. The new device is intended to achieve effective silencing in the said operating conditions. A butterfly valve (23) which interacts with a control element (25), is arranged in the air intake port (12). The butterfly valve (23) assumes an open position at full load and in the upper partial load operation of the internal combustion engine (10) and a closed position in lower partial load operation and in overrun conditions. When the butterfly valve (23) is closed, the air inlet (11) of the internal combustion engine (10) is connected by way of a calibrated bypass opening (30) to that section of the air intake port (12) situated upstream of the butterfly valve (23).
