A method, and a device for carrying out the method, for producing a waistband on garments. An elastic strip is introduced into a partial region of a waistband, for example of trousers, and attached in such a way as to allow secure connection of the beginning and the end of the elastic strip in the seam area whilst using up as little as possible of the strip. The beginning and the end of the elastic strip are connected without tension to the garment; an intermediate region of the elastic strip is tensioned and connected in the tensioned state to the garment.
