PURPOSE:To improve the yield of the titled compound which is a main component of an acrylic resin article having excellent electrical insulation, etc., and useful as a coating material, etc., in a short time under mild condition, by using a specific catalyst in the dehydration of an alpha-hydroxyisobutyric acid ester. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound can be produced by dehydrating an alpha-hydroxyisobutyric acid ester of formula (R is 1-4C alkyl) under normal or reduced pressure at 50-150 deg.C, preferably 60-110 deg.C using sodium methoxide or potassium methoxide as a catalyst and supplying the catalyst to the reaction system in the course of the reaction. The catalyst may be supplied in solid state, however, it is preferable to supply the catalyst intermittently or continuously in the form of a solution dissolved in a solvent, preferably methanol. The objective compound is preferably purified by distillation, etc., after quickly and continuously distilling off the produced water, added methanol and the objective compound. |
