PURPOSE:To prevent chipping at the time of grooving and to improve magnetic characteristics and production yield by forming an easily removable coating material on a mirror-finished surface of a core stock such as ferrite and grooving the core stock, the removing the coating material. CONSTITUTION:The mirror-finished surface of the hard and brittle core stock 1 such as ferrite is heated and melted at about 100 deg.C to form a protective layer 2 thereon at about 0.2-0.5mm thickness. Track grooves 3 having no inclination are worked on the side face after cooling. The ferrite is then heated to remove the protective layer 2 and the surface thereof is cleaned. The angle parts of the protective layers are chipped 4 at the time of the grooving but the angle parts 6 of the grooves are not chipped and, therefore, the magnetic characteristics as a head core are improved and the production yield is improved as well.
