Hydrocarbonaceous fuels are partially oxidised with a free-O2 -contg. gas in a free-flow, non-catalytic gas generator at 1700-3500 deg.F and 1-300 atm. and in the presence of a temp. moderator, where the raw, soot-contg. gas stream is quenched/scrubbed with water to produce an aq. soot dispersion (I) from which the soot (II) is sepd. in a decanter (A) for recycle to the gas generator. The improvement comprises: (a) mixing (I) with a first stream of a light paraffinic extractant (III) and introducing the mixt., together with a second stream of (III), into (A); (b) removing from (A) (i) a stream (IV) of (III) contg. dispersed (II) and (ii) a stream of grey water contg. dispersed ash; (c) mixing (i) an aspholtenic heavy refinery fraction (V) and (ii) an aromatic-rich liq. or vapour (VI) to yield a first, pumpable, liquid phase mixt. (VII); (d) mixing (IV) with (VII) to produce a second, pumpable, liquid-phase mixt. (VIII); and (e) fractionating (VIII) to yield (i) (III) for recycle to step (a); (ii) (VI) for recycle to step (c); and (iii) a pumpable dispersion (IX) of (II) in (V), opt. with any residual (VI), for recycle to the gas generator. |
