An apparatus for disintegrating essentially organic refuse, such as coarse rubbish, shrubs or the like, with a disintegrating device to which a conveying element is assigned, is to ensure a uniform grain size and good defibration of the fed material together with a good disintegrating effect. For this purpose, the disintegrating device is a defibration or beating rotor (24) above a travelling grate (52) having carrier studs or webs (54) extending transversely with respect to a perforated bottom. A further development consists in that the disintegrating device (18) is attached between a drawing-in belt (47) and a defibration or beating rotor (24) in a housing (12) and in that the conveying element engages beneath at least the discharge side of the disintegrating device and of the beating rotor. <IMAGE>
