In processing oil-seeds by conditioning, sepn. and working up the oil and then solvent removal from the solids, (i) the cleaned oil-seeds are dry-heated without preliminary comminution, to inactivate the enzymes present. (ii) The prods. are pressed in a continuous screw-press. The oil is drawn off. (iii) Residual oil is removed from the press-cake by solvent-extn.. (a) Heating pref. takes place at 90-120 deg.C, for 5-45 min.. (b) The oil-seeds are peeled after heating. (c) The oil recovered in pressing and solvent extn. is processed on its own. (d) Superheated hexane gas is used to remove the solvent from the solids. (e) In processing rape-seed, the solid undergoes an aq. alcoholic extn. of the glucose inolates and phenolic cpds.. The protein isolates are then recovered by extn. and pptn.. (f) In processing soya-beans, the solids are toasted after removing the solvent. |
