PURPOSE:To obtain overall information on the stereoscopic shape, etc., of a char bed by forming the titled instrument in such a manner that image synthesis is executed by using plural two-dimensional image pickup devices, etc., adjusted to the measurement wavelength suitable for measuring the char bed. CONSTITUTION:A black liquor 2 is ejected into a recovery boiler 1 and is burned to form the mound of the char bed 3. The combustion heat generated at this time heats the water in heaters 4 in the upper part of the boiler 1 to form steam which rotates a turbine to generate electric power, etc. The radiation energy from the char bed 3, etc., is detected by the plural two-dimensional image pickup devices 5 provided on the wall surface of the boiler 1. The outputs of the device 5 are subjected to the image synthesis by an image synthesizing means and are computed by a computing means to display the stereoscopic shape, temp. pattern, etc., of the char bed 3 by a display means. The overall information on the stereoscopic shape, etc., of the char bed 3 is, therefore, obtd. and the combustion of the boiler 1 is satisfactorily controlled.
