In the construction of a tunnel under a stretch of water, e.g. a river course (1), first of all the part (5a) of the tunnel tube (5) which is located in the region of the river (6) is produced by an open method of construction, e.g. as an underwater tunnel, in which individual prefabricated sections of the tunnel tube are floated into position and sunk. Then the parts (5b, 5c) of the tunnel tube (5) which lie in the bank area are driven from the land by a closed method of construction, e.g. by shield driving by means of a driving shield (15). The driving-side ends of these parts (5b, 5c) are directly attached in a sealed manner to the end (17), corresponding in each case to these ends in inner cross-section, of the already constructed part (5a) of the tunnel tube (5). The end part (17) of the centre piece (5a) of the tunnel tube (5) can be of socket-like design, the driving shield (15) being moved into this socket. Owing to the fact that the inner cross-sections of the tunnel-tube parts constructed according to different methods are designed in a manner corresponding to one another, i.e. the ventilation ducts are also arranged at corresponding points of the cross-section, the different parts of the tunnel tube can be directly attached to one another without expensive transition structures. <IMAGE>
