PURPOSE:To emit bactericidal rays at a high density and efficiently by restricting the protruded length of an amalgam reservoir projection used as a mercury vapor feed source and the distance from an outer tube. CONSTITUTION:A luminous tube is bent into a U-shape and provided with the projection having the protruded length (l) on its bent section, an amalgam serving as a mercury vapor feed source is stored in this projection, the distance L between the projection tip end an outer tube facing it is set to 8mm or more, and the protruded length (l) is set to 10mm <= (l) <= 15mm when the lamp input density is 3W/cm or more and 5W/cm or less, and to 15mm <= (l) eta 20mm when the lamp input density is more than 5W/cm and 10W/cm or less. Accord ingly, the amalgam is heated within the optimum temperature range during the lighting, and the luminous tube can be easily maintained at a low-pressure mercury vapor state convenient to emit far ultraviolet rays of 254nm.
