A sheet (1) or a web (10) of cardboard or similarly absorbent material is provided with a cutting line (4) immediately adjacent to the edge (3) of the free end to be impregnated. The portion (5) located between the edge and the cutting line is then bent off so that the cutting line is opened. The impregnation means can then be introduced into the opened gap of the cutting line in a simple manner and at a very high working speed.
