PURPOSE:To certainly feed a recording medium, by a method wherein the recording medium is set at a printing position in the state mounted on and held to a planar platen and the platen is driven by a platen driving means according to the platen driving signal generated in relation to a printing signal. CONSTITUTION:Slip paper 19 is placed on the placing surface 16 of a platen 15 so that the printing surface thereof is turned upwardly and, after the fixing of the slit paper 19 is completed, a motor 45 is started and the platen 15 is moved while guided on rails 13R, 13L. The motor 45 is stopped so that the printing start position of the slip paper 19 is positioned directly under a printing head 33. Thereafter, the supply of a current to a motor 39 is cut off and both support arms 29R, 29L fall by the elastic force of a coil spring 44. When the control mode of a printer is made on-line in this state, a carriage 32 is driven by a carriage driving apparatus to move to a left margin position. Subsequently, the printing head 33 starts printing according to a printing signal and the carriage 32 moves with the starting of printing. By this constitution, high quality printing can be performed without generating the positional shift of a recording medium in a feed route.
