PURPOSE:To enable capping, by a method wherein, a capping part is provided with a protrusion, a carriage is provided with a cam part having a groove engaging with the protrusion, after the completion of printing the capping part is once moved back to its retracted position due to the restoring force of a head and, thereafter, the carriage is positioned on a capping position. CONSTITUTION:A carriage 4 travels to a capping position at the completion of printing. At this time, if a capping portion 5 is not in a retracted position, the protrusion 15 of the capping part 5 comes into contact with a cam D on the carriage 4 side, whereby the capping part 5 is positioned on its retracted position. Due to the succeeding movement of the carriage 4, the protrusion 15 of the capping part 5 is engaged with a groove 16 of the cam D of the carriage 4, and the carriage 4 is travelled to the capping part to be positioned thereto with deviation corrected. In this manner, if a solenoid 13 which moves the capping part 5 fails to retract the capping part 5, the retraction of the capping part 5 is conducted to prevent the damages and ensure capping. |
