PURPOSE:To transfer a recording material to an image reception body to obtain an image of high quality by pressing the central rear face part of a pressure roll with a backup roll whose width is about 1/3 of the width of the pressure roll. CONSTITUTION:Backup rolls 96 and 120 whose width is about 1/3 of the width of the pressure roll is pressed to the central rear face part of at least one of a pair of pressure rolls 74 and 80 by a prescribed pressing force. Since recording materials and the image reception body are uniformly press-fixed with pressure rolls by the action of backup rolls, an image of high quality is formed on the image reception body by transfer. Since pressure rolls are pressed with an optimum pressure by backup rolls having an optimum shape, the weight of the device is reduced.
