In classifying and grading glossinesses based on the visible feeling by the light reflection intensity distribution of a surface of a body: light fluxes having wavelengths .lambda.1 and .lambda.2, by which a standard deviation ? of a height distribution of a profile of a surface to be measured satisfies the relationship between the following formulae, are projected at incident angles .theta.1 and .theta.2, respectively, ( 4 .pi. .sigma. / .lambda. 1 ? cos.theta. 1 ) 2 ? 1 ( 4 .pi. .sigma. / .lambda. 2 ? cos.theta. 2 ) 2 ? 4 specular reflection intensities I1 and I2 and total reflection intensities S1 and S2 are detected; and said specular reflection intensities I1 and I2 and said total reflection intensities S1 and S2 are processed, to thereby divide the glossinesses of a work to be measured.
