PURPOSE:To provide a chitin sponge having a high void content, a high wet strength and excellent flexibility and being useful as a protective coating material for wound, cosmetic utensil, etc., by adding a softener to a water-insoluble chitin sponge. CONSTITUTION:A water-soluble high-molecular material (A) [e.g., PVA having a degree of polymn. of 50-2,000 and a degree of saponification not lower than 95mol.%) is dispersed in a chitin dope (B) obtd. by dissolving 0.05-50W/W% of chitin in a solvent (e.g., an aq. acetic acid soln.) in a weight ratio of B to A of 1/5-10/1. The dispersion is coagulated in a coagulating soln. (e.g., an aq. soln. of NaOH) to obtain a molded product. The molded product is treated at 80-120 deg.C for 1hr or longer by immersing it in water contg. small amounts of salts to dissolve out and remove the component A, thus obtaining a chitin sponge having a void content not lower than 80%. The sponge is immersed in an aq. soln. contg. not less than 0.01W/W% of a softener (e.g. polyethylene glycol) for 1-30min to incorporate at least 0.005wt.% softener in the sponge. The resulting sponge is freeze-dried.
