PURPOSE:To form a compsn. for use in coating a metallic surface to give a treated surface having high corrosion resistance and suitability as a ground for coating, by mixing a specified inorg./org. composite reaction product mainly composed of water-dispersible silica and a water-soluble or water-dispersible org. polymer resin with a water-soluble or water-dispersible chromium compd. CONSTITUTION:This surface treating compsn. for imparting high corrosion resistance to metallic surfaces is obtd. by mixing an inorg./org. composite reaction product (hereinafter referred to as silica composite material) composed of water-dispersible silica, a water-soluble or water-dispersible org. polymer resin and a di- or trialkoxy (or alkoxyalkoxy)silane compd. with a water-soluble or water-dispersible chromium compd. Examples of the water-soluble or water- dispersible chromium compd. are chromic anhydride, chromates, dichromates and chromium chromate composed of hexavalent chromium and trivalent chromium or its salts. The chromium compd. is used in an amount ref. not more than 40wt.% based on that of the silica composite material on a solid basis.
