PURPOSE:To permit stabilized operation, by a method wherein gate current is supplied independently of the supply of operating current for a gate current control system. CONSTITUTION:When an ON pulse is outputted from a controller 5, base current is supplied from a DC power source 12 to transistors 8a, 8b and ON gate current is supplied to a GTO thyristor 1 from another DC power source 10. In parallel, the charging current of a capacitor 13b by the other DC power source 13 is supplied in addition to the ON gate current. When the ON pulse, outputted from a controller 5, is eliminated, transistors 9a, 9b are switched on and OFF current is supplied from the DC power source 11 to the GTO thyristor 1. In this case, discharging current due to a charge, charged in the capacitor 13b, is added. According to this method, a resistance to noise may be increased sufficiently.
