PURPOSE:To make it possible to aim at greatly enhancing the operation rate of an NC lathe by providing a spindle which is directed toward a turret during positioning and a spindle which is directed in the X-axial forward direction during positioning so that the rear section of both spindles are made to threedimensionally cross a turnable spindle bed above and below the turn center axis so that a lathing position and a workpiece removing and mounting position are alternately indexed. CONSTITUTION:A workpiece is inserted into gripping pawls 19a and gripped by a B-chuck 19, and then a spindle B is rotated at a low speed to check the deflection of the gripped workpiece. If the deflection is within a tolerance, the spindle B is rotated at a cutting position by a turnable spindle bed 4 so as to perform a first machining process. Next the workpiece after completion of the first machining process is gripped by an A-chuck 17 having gripping pawls 17a, and a spindle A is rotated at a low speed to check the deflection of the workpiece. If the deflection is within a tolerance the spindle A is rotated at a cutting position by the turnable spindle bed 4 to complete a second machining process. Further, the spindle shaft A is turned at a removing and mounting position to remove the workpiece. Thus, the mount and removal of a workpiece and the deflection of a mounted workpiece may be confirmed during lathing, thereby it is possible to aim at greatly enhancing the operation rate of the lathe.
