PURPOSE:To shorten reaction time, increase specific surface area and stabilize the characteristics of a synthetic porous material having a 3-octahedral smectite- like structure, by using a specific composition composed of F, SiO2 and an oxide of an alkali metal, etc., and a bivalent metal such as Mg as the porous material. CONSTITUTION:The synthetic porous material is expressed by the general formula (0<a<=2; 0<b<10; 0<=c<6; 0<=d<6; 1<=x<=2; A is alkali or alkaline earth metal ion and/or NH4 ion; M is one or more bivalent metal ions such as Mg, Co, Ni, Zn, Cu, etc.). The porous material can be produced by (1) producing a homogeneous composite precipitate from a homogeneous liquid mixture of silicic acid and bivalent metal ion satisfying the composition of the general formula and an alkaline solution, (2) removing by-produced solute, (3) optionally adding cation and F ion in amounts to satisfy the above composition, (4) subjecting the resultant slurry to hydrothermal reaction at about 100-350 deg.C and (5) heating the reaction product at about 100-800 deg.C.
