PURPOSE:To obtain an inexpensive window material for optical use capable of being made into a large area, comprising a diamond having excellent light transmission properties, by forming a filmy diamond on a substrate material by a vapor synthesis method and partially removing the substrate material. CONSTITUTION:A filmy diamond is formed on a substrate material by using vapor synthesis method and then the outer peripheral part of the substrate material is coated with a resist material. Then the substrate material only in an exposed part which is not coated with the resist material is eliminated by chemical dissolution or physical etching to give a filmy diamond single layer. In the operation, the substrate material is left in a window frame shape at the outer peripheral part coated with the resist material. Thus an optical window material comprising the filmy diamond is obtained. Heat CVD method, plasma CVD method, ion beam method, ionizing deposition method, etc., may be cited as the vapor synthesis method applied.
