PURPOSE:To obtain an antimicrobial agent, containing a specific pyrazolopyrazine derivative as an active ingredient, having a powerful antimicrobial activity and excellent antimicrobial action on dental caries, periodontosis, cariogenic bacteria, etc., as well as blending characteristics and feeling of use. CONSTITUTION:The aimed substance obtained by using a 1,5-substituted-1H- pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyrazine derivative expressed by the formula [R1 is H, OH, halogen, hydrazino, group -O-R' or -NH-R' (R' is substituted phenyl, etc.); R2 is H, alkyl, benzyl or phenyl] alone or, if necessary, together with other antimicrobial agents, preservatives, etc. blending in a composition for the oral cavity, chemicals, cosmetics, etc., and preparing a pharmaceutical by a conventional method. If the compound expressed by the formula is blended in the composition for the oral cavity, the amount thereof blended is 0.00001-1wt.% based on the total amount of the ingredients. The agent is preferably used without bitterness or tooth coloring action when used in the composition for the oral cavity, e.g. tooth paste, mouthwash, etc.
