PURPOSE:To aim at shortening the time of machining and at unmanning the machining operation by previously setting a maximum cumulative retracting amount during retracting control, for every shape of machining locus so that a plurality of processes having different shapes of machining loci are carried out by appropriate maximum retracting amounts, respectively. CONSTITUTION:A machining power source 12 is turned on in accordance with a control signal from an NC control device 11 so as to energize drive devices 16, 17, 18 through a servo-controller, and therefore, a machining process is progressed while the relative positions of an electrode 13 and a workpiece is controlled. Then, the discharge condition between the electrode 13 and the workpiece 14 is detected, and is delivered to a CPU. At this time, if it is discriminated that the interpole condition is unstable, a maximum cumulative retracting amount is read from a RAM and is compared with the previously obtained value. Further, if the retracting amount is less, the electrode 13 is retracted along a machining locus. With this arrangement, it is possible to eliminate useless time.
