PURPOSE:To surely separate filter mediums and impurities with small motive power by agitating the under surfaces part of a filter medium layer and discharging one part of water incorporated in a filter tank and furthermore agitating the filter medium layer with raw water and thereafter discharging turbid water. CONSTITUTION:In case of filtering raw water by using floating filter mediums and washing clogged filter mediums to regenerate them, the filter mediums are loosened by agitating only the lowermost layer part of a filter medium layer 1 with an impeller 2 and thereby clogged impurities are diffused on the bottom of the filter tank 1 and thereafter sewage diffused with impurities is discharged. Then after introducing raw water from the lower part and agitating the filter medium layer 1, turbid water is discharged. As a result, the filter mediums and impurities can be surely separated and furthermore the motive power to be used is reduced.
