PURPOSE:To prevent the dissipation of end parts of character lines by detecting lines including end points of character lines to reduce a character picture pattern. CONSTITUTION:Correspondence of bit positions is checked among the (P+1)th line, the P-th line, and the (P-1)th line read out from a character picture memory 1. If a block where plural bit position correspondence patterns (110) are continuous exists and bit position correspondence patterns adjacent to this block are (000) or (100) or a block where plural bit position correspondence patterns (011) are continuous exists and bit position correspondence patterns adjacent to this block are (000) or (001), a projecting end pattern is decided, and the number of bits included in the projecting end pattern on the P-th line is determined.
