PURPOSE:To improve the performance of a servo track writer by controlling a head carriage mechanism in accordance with servo information by a closed loop to keep a magnetic head on a prescribed track position independently of a positioning mechanism in the case of check of set servo information. CONSTITUTION:In the case of setting of servo information, a positioning driving circuit 7 is controlled by the detection signal, which is detected by a position detector, to drive a rod 4a and a head carriage mechanism 3 is pushed or pulled to position a magnetic head 2 on a prescribed track position. In the case of check of this set servo information, the magnetic head is kept on the prescribed track by the control of the closed loop which controls a head carriage driving circuit 10 by servo information read out by the magnetic head 2 to move the head carriage mechanism 3. Therefore, a positioning mechanism 4 is not a load on the head carriage mechanism 3 at all and the seek operation of the magnetic head is satisfactorily performed. Thus, the magnetic head is positioned with a high precision without increasing the weight of the magnetic head.
