PURPOSE:To enable production of cast slab having free width in wide range by dividing side dam block groups shifting as synchronizing with shifting veloc ity of water cooling belt into two groups. CONSTITUTION:One pair of the side dam 8 holding the cast slab 21 side to one pair of the water cooling belts 3 are divided into each two groups of side dam block 8a group having at least longer than contacting length L with the cast slab 21 and the other side dam block 8a' group and connected with them by a continuously flexible metal belt 8b. A circulating guide composing of a shiftable guide beam 10a toward width direction of the cast slab 21 and a fixed guide beam 10c is arranged and the guide beam 10a is shifted toward width direction of the cast slab 21. In this way, the width of the cast slab 21 after the side block 8a is reached to the molten surface 20a can be changed. Further, the width change of cast slat 21 is executed without any interrupting the casting.
