In a winding machine for threads, the traversing device is driven from the winding spindle via a continuously adjustable gear. So that the traversing speed can be set as a function of the rotational speed of the bobbin, the setting device for the gear consists of a mechanical diameter-sensing device (4) for the bobbin (1), the deflection of which is transmitted to a template (30). The template (30) is of sawtooth-like design and is sensed by a sensing head. The template possesses relatively flat flanks (32), by means of which the traversing speed is reduced in proportion to the rotational speed of the spindle, and steep flanks (33) for increasing the rotational speed of the spindle in a jump. <IMAGE>
