Bicarbonate is subjected to in situ or external thermal decomposition giving off carbon dioxide, and the so formed potassium, rubidium or cesium carbonate respectively is reacted with carbon monoxide and water in a liquid reaction medium in which methanol is the major component, at a temperature in the range 50-240°C and a carbon monoxide pressure in the range 1-50 bar. Thereby potassium, rubidium or cesium formate respectively is formed in the form of a liquid, aqueous methanol solution, and this solution is contacted with a heterogeneous palladium catalyst at a temperature in the range 50-240°C, whereby hydrogen is formed as product. The simultaneously formed bicarbonate is recycled for continued use in the process.
|
