PURPOSE:To obtain a color image of high quality by changing an under-color removing UCR value in accordance with the quantity of black and the chromatic colors of an original in case of finding out the quantity of coloring materials of yellow, cyan, magenta, and black from the reading outputs of a color image. CONSTITUTION:Chrominance signals of red R, green G and blue B read out from a color image by a CCD sensor 20 are converted into gradation signals R1, G1, B1 for each of which consists of 8 bits. The ununiformity or the like of light quantity in a light source is converted by a correcting circuit 22 to obtain signals R2, G2, B2. Then, yellow Y1, magenta M1 and cyan C1 are obtained by a complementary color converting circuit 23 and a black K1 is obtained by a black extracting circuit 25. On the other hand, the quantity of chromatic colors to be changed in accordance with the colors is found out by a color extracting circuit 24, the removing quantity of an under-color is determined by a UCR 27 on the basis of the luminance, the quantity of chromatic colors and the quantity K1 of black and the determined value is subtracted from the signals C1, M1, Y1 to obtain chrominance signals C2, M2, Y2. A signal K2 is obtained by a black adjusting circuit 28 and these chrominance signals are sent to a printer 29 to obtain a color image of high quality.
