The application relates to a process for the preparation of bifunctional compounds of the formula <IMAGE> in which R<1>, R<2> and R<3> can denote alkyl radicals having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, R<2> and R<3> can additionally also denote hydrogen, R<2> can additionally also denote alkoxy radicals and R<4> can denote hydrogen, alkyl radicals having 1 to 6 carbon atoms and alkoxy radicals and there can be a double bond between the carbon atoms 2 and 3, by reaction of tetraalkoxyalkanes or dialkoxyalkanoic acid esters of the formulae <IMAGE> in which R<1> to R<4> have the above meaning, in the presence of catalysts such as zeolites, in particular of the pentasil type and/or phosphates and/or phosphoric acid on support material.
