A holding plate (2) is rigidly fixed to the handle (1) of the ratchet spanner. Two legs (3, 4) which can pivot about a respective axis (3a, 4a) are arranged on said holding plate (2). The two legs (3, 4) are interconnected in an articulated manner via a driving cam (4b) which is arranged on the smaller leg (4) and which engages in a corresponding recess (3b) of the larger limb (3). Both limbs are dimensioned and coordinated in such a way that they move apart in opposite directions when the spanner is laterally pushed onto a screw head or a nut and both lie on the circumference of the screw head or nut when the spanner is actuated. Use of the spanner for actuating screw heads and nuts which are difficult to get at, in particular union nuts in pipe construction. <IMAGE>
