The invention relates to a device for the winding of armatures of electric motors, consisting of an arm whose free end runs round the armature and at the same time lays wire in slots in the armature, and of a switching mechanism whose output shaft can be connected to the shaft of the armature and which causes the armature to rotate in a step by step manner. The invention comprises the switching mechanism consisting of a gear wheel (1) which is seated detachably on the output shaft and can be replaced by gear wheels having different diameters, a toothed segment (2) which can be engaged with the gear wheel (1) in order to rotate the armature onwards in a step by step manner, a first force unit (3) which can move the toothed segment (2) in a reciprocating manner, a second force unit (4) which can press the toothed segment (2) against the gear wheel (1) and remove it therefrom, a stop (5) which can be adjusted by hand and by means of which the pivoting angle of the toothed segment (2) can be varied, a toothed comb (6) which can engage with the gear wheel (1) and blocks said gear wheel (1) while wire is being laid in the slots, and a third force unit (7) which can press the toothed comb (6) against the gear wheel (1) and can remove it therefrom.
