In an indexable unit for machine tools which has a stationary part (1), a part (3) rotatably arranged about the part (1), a drive motor (7, 8), gearing (9, 10, 11), a locking device (14, 18, 19), and a signal device for detecting the angular positions of the rotatable part (3), the signal device is formed by a multiplicity of currentless detecting or coding elements (24), inserted in one of the parts (3) rotatable relative to one another, and a decoding or reading device inductively interacting with these detecting or coding elements (24) and arranged in the other part (1). This design enables the angular positions of the rotatable part (3) to be recognised in a space-orientated manner without error signals caused by bouncing occurring and without additional construction space being taken up. On the contrary, contactless recognition of the index position is possible. <IMAGE>
