[Also in Division C1] Complex basic lead compounds for use as stabilizers in halogen-containing synthetic resins are prepared by reacting, at 20-100‹ C. and preferably 50-80‹ C., an aqueous suspension of lead monoxide with hydrochloric acid in the presence of a saturated lower aliphatic carboxylic acid having not more than four carbon atoms and separating the barely soluble reaction product, the amount of HCl reacted being such that the chlorine content of the separated product is 1À5-5À5% by weight. One or more other inorganic acids, e.g. H 2 SO 4 , HSO 3 , H 3 PO 4 and/or one or more other organic acids, e.g. adipic, stearic, palmitic, may be added to the reaction mixture before, simultaneously with or after the addition of the hydrochloric acid.
