A device for determining the ground clearance of a motor vehicle has a sensor (3) arranged in the cylinder of a shock-absorber (1) and coaxially with its piston (2), a downstream amplifier (9) and an a.c. current generator (7). The sensor (3) is constructed in the manner of a differential transformer and has an a.c. current-fed primary coil (4) and two secondary coils (5, 6). The displacement of the piston (2), which carries out the function of a magnetic core in the transformer, leads to a voltage signal in the secondary coils (4, 5) and at the output (9a) of the device. <IMAGE>
