1,3-Cyclopentylene compounds of the formula I R<1>-A<1>-Z<1>-A<2>-(Z<2>-A<3>)n-R<2> in which R<1>, R<2>, A<1>, A<2>, A<3>, Z<1>, Z<2> and n are as defined in Claim 1, can be used as components of liquid-crystalline phases.
