A method and an apparatus are described for producing a fibre strand, especially for the production of filters or cigarettes and similar smokeable articles. A moving strand (4) of fibrous material contains an additional material component (plasticiser, water). The strand density is measured with two measuring devices (37, 38) which record the influence of the strand components in different ways, and different first and second strand density signals are generated. In an analysis arrangement (42), the first and second strand density signals are processed to give a difference signal, which represents a measure of the percentage by volume of the additional components contained in the strand and is used to control a device (33) which influences the proportion of the additional components. <IMAGE>
