PURPOSE:To facilitate the easy decision of color edges effective to various color processes and to realize the processing and output of pictures of high quality, by obtaining the value similar to the 3-dimensional distance of the chromaticity data on an even color space and deciding the color edge based on said value. CONSTITUTION:A color converter 2 converts the three primary color signals into the signals of color spaces which are perceptively even, e.g.,, CIE1976L*, a* and b* even color spaces. Then a color edge block deciding means 4 obtains approximately the 3-dimensional distance DELTAEab between two picture elements in accordance with DELTAEab = ¦L*1-L*2¦ + ¦a*1-a*2¦ + ¦b*1-b*2¦ as long as the coordinates of color signals of two picture elements are defined as (L*1, a*1, b*1) and (L*2, a*2, b*2) respectively. The distance DELTAEab is compared with the prescribed value for detection of a color edge between two picture elements. Thus the color edge can be decided at a high speed and a low cost.
