PURPOSE:To obtain a synthetic silicate contg. 3d metal expressed with a specified formula, having a large cation-exchange capacity, excellent swelling capacity, gelatinization ability in an aq. system and a capacity capable of forming practically transparent film, and being usable for a solid acid catalyst, a magnetic material and an optical resolution. CONSTITUTION:The synthetic silicate contg. 3d metal expressed with the follow ing formula and having a structure similar to octahederon smectite is obtained. Namely the silicate is expressed with the formula: [(Sis-aAla)(RxMgyAlb).O20.(OH)4-cFc]<-(a-b)>.Ma-b<+z>, wherein (a), (b), (c), (k), (y) and (z) are in the relation of 0<a<2; 0<=b<1.5; 0<=c<=4; 0<x<=6; 0<=y<6; 1<=z<=2, x+y+b=6, a-b>0 and further M expresses alkali metal ion, alkaline earth metal ion or ammonium ion and R is at least one kind ion selected among 3d metal ions. Here group VIII metal in the fourth period of the periodic table is expressed as 3d metal.
