PURPOSE:To analyze and detect deposits and defects nondestructively by etching the surface of an object to be inspected by using an etching soln. to expose the defects, transferring the defects onto a coating material coated on the surface and making inspection and analysis with an X-ray microanalyzer. CONSTITUTION:The surface of metallic and nonmetallic materials to be used for boilers, turbines, etc., is first etched by using an alcohol soln. of picric acid and hydrochloric acid to expose the deposits and defects at the time of analyzing and detecting the surface defects of the above-mentioned materials an the microdefects generated thereon. A coating liquid contg. Al is then coated on the surface including the same and the coating is lightly polished by a buff contg. diamond to transfer the deposits and defects to the coating layer. Such deposits and defects are transferred to a replica film. The film is thereafter coated with carbon to prevent burn by electron beam and is subjected to the inspection and analysis by the X-ray microanalyzer to obtain a spectral diagram of the surface condition. The presence or absence of the deposits and defects or the positions thereof are thereby known.
