Method for detecting welding groove position in a process for arc welding along a groove is effected while monitoring the groove position in which the shape of arc light is photographed from above a longitudinal portion of work, pref. by an industrial camera integral with the welding torch. The photographed arc light shape is converted to binary values and the welding groove position is detected by analysing singular points of the contour of the arc light shape.
