PURPOSE:To produce a chelate resin having a superior adsorption capacity, by reacting a specific functional group-containing resin with hydroxylamine. CONSTITUTION:A resin having functional groups of the formula (where R is an amino or its derivative) is reacted with hydroxylamine to yield the intended chelate resin. The reactant ratio of the resin having functional groups of the formula to hydroxylamine is such that about 0.25mol. or more of hydroxylamine is used per mole of the functional group of the formula in the resin. Since the use of more than the required amount of the reactant requires a recovering process after the reaction, which makes the process complicated, preferably about 0.5-5mol. of hydroxylamine per mole of the functional group of the formula in the resin is used. A decrease in the proportion of hydroxylamine below about 0.25mol. is undesirable, becaure it leads to a decreases in the amount of the introduction of chelate-forming functional groups, which lowers the metal adsorption capacity of the resulting chelate resin.
