[Also in Divisions B4 and G4] Blank sheets of glass, metal, plastic, paper etc., are cut to various required sizes with a minimum waste of material, the position of each cut being determined by linear programming of a computer. The quantities of waste material are compared for various cutting procedures of longitudinal and transverse cuts of the blank and off-cut pieces, and the procedure with the minimum waste is chosen. Various procedures are described as follows:- (a) Geometric procedure.-The length and width of each required size is graphically represented at points P, Fig. 4, on a blank S 1 . Further points A, A 2 represent resultant offcuts after initial longitudinal or transverse cuts from which smaller sizes K n (Fig. 2, not shown) may be cut by further longitudinal and/or transverse cuts. By programming the fulfilment of an order for required larger sizes by all the alternative cutting procedures, the procedure producing the greatest number of smaller required sizes may be selected. (b) Arithmetic procedure.-After programming alternative off-cut sizes and numbers from initial longitudinal and/or transverse cuts the resultant summed lengths of strips of off-cuts placed end-to-end are compared with the summed lengths of strips of required sizes having at least one dimension near to the width of the off-cut strips. Procedures producing the greatest number of smaller required sizes are then selected. The method may also be used to determine the most suitable initial blank dimensions to cut from continuous strip material to meet an order book of required sizes to be cut from the blanks.
