PURPOSE:To produce a cellulose derivative useful as a raw material for synthetic resins suitable for vehicles, adhesives, etc., by reacting residual hydroxy groups of a cellulose derivative with an isocyanate compound having polymerizable double bonds. CONSTITUTION:A polymerizable cellulose derivative which is produced by intro ducing of double bonds in to a cellulose derivative by reacting residual hydroxyl group of the cellulose derivative with an isocyanate group of an isocyanate compound having polymerizable double bonds. The isocyanate compound to be used is an isocyanate group-containing (meth)acrylate, which has a polymerizable double bond and an isocyanate group in the molecule. The reac tion of introducing a double bond is generally carried out in an organic solvent having no active hydrogen, if desired, using a catalyst, at room temperature to 100 deg.C. The reaction time is usually of the order of 5-15hr.
