The compounds have the formula in which A is an optionally substituted radical from the series comprising alkyl, acyl, cycloalkyl, aryl and heteroaryl; B is CO, CS, C=NH, CN-alkyl, CN-O-alkyl, SO, optionally substituted CH2 or a bond; D is NH, NCH3, O, CH2 or a bond; E is CHOH, CO, SO or optionally N-substituted C=NH; F is O, NH, NCH3 or a bond; R<4> is an optionally substituted radical from the series comprising alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl and heteroaryl; and R<8> is hydrogen or optionally substituted alkyl, and are used as inhibitors of prolyl hydroxylase.
