A car ignition switch has an illuminable indicia-bearing dial 14 (Fig. 3, not shown), manually rotatable successively to a plurality of predetermined positions to rotate a manipulating cylinder 10 which sets certain contacts in a relationship such that subsequent rotation of the switching shaft 16 and switch member 17 via knob 15 causes completion of the ignition circuit and starting motor circuit to start the car engine (Fig. 14, not shown), incorrect selective positioning of dial 14 giving an alarm to notify wrong operation and ensuring that completion of the connections to the ignition circuit and starting motor is not made. The invention is to make illumination of dial 14 by lamp 31 optional, by rotation of shaft 16 to a lighting position (26), (Fig. 3, not shown), from the " off" position (27) to which it is returned by a spring (53), (Fig. 10, not shown), the shaft 16 being rotated in the opposite direction to the starting position (30) or operating position (29) after suitable selective setting of the dial 14, e.g. clockwise to select indicia " 6 " and then anti-clockwise to select indicia' " 4." Cylinder 10 rotates a metal ring 41 via protrusions 40, 44, and carries conductive plates 35, 36, engageable through a gap in ring 41 by a contact 48 mounted on a plate 18. |
