A polishing agent for the treatment of coated surfaces, contains one or more metal alkoxides of formula M(OR)n (I) where M is a metal of Gp IIIB, IV or VA (e.g. Al, Ga, In, Si, Ti, Zr, Ta or Nb); R is a straight or branched, satd. or unsatd., aliphatic 1-22C hydrocarbyl group; n is in accordance with the valency of the metal atom; or their homopolymers or copolymers (pref. average degree of polymerisation 2-10). Preferred are Zr(OR)4, Ti (OR)4 or their (co)polymers, and esp.. Ti(OR)4 where R is 1-10C straight or branched alkyl. The compound (I) is pref. used as a solution in a 1-30C alcohol, silicone oil or a hydrocarbon. In (I), M is Ti or Zr; n is 4; of the R groups 10-100% are 4-22C straight or branched satd. or unsatd. aliphatic hydrocarbyl, and 90-0% are 1-4C straight or branched satd. aliphatic hydrocarbyl. |
